“Product Placement Goes Digital”

Posted by joe

I don’t know about you, but I rarely see television commercial — except when I am researching commercials and video clips to show in class.  I typically record shows on my DVR and zip right through the commercials.  I am not alone.  And if we all continue down this trend, the cost of programming will go up considerably.  TV networks are increasing their use of an old standby – product placement.  Except now, advertisers are digitally sticking their products into a show after it has been produced.  The video below, “Product Placement Goes Digital” appeared over at Slate.com (September 14, 2011).

What do you think of this trend?  Does it bother you?  What if it goes too far — link here or link here for examples of perhaps going too far?

“POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold”

Posted by joe

“I wanna make a film all about product placement, marketing, and advertising, where the entire film is funded by product placement, marketing, and advertising.”

This new film “POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold” is a documentary by Morgan Spurlock. This is the same guy who took down McDonald’s in Super Size Me. The movie opens April 22 and appears to be a spoof on product placement, marketing, and advertising.   As business school students, you should be on top of this one — so check out the trailer below and read an interview with Spurlock at Fast Company – see “Morgan Spurlock: I’m With the Brand” (March 24, 2011).  Then go see the movie and tell us what you think in a comment.
